Before Coco Chanel, a French fashion designer, blazers were only for men. They were stiff, formal, and part of strict suits. However, Chanel saw things differently. She believed women deserved comfort and style and she wasn’t afraid to break the societal rules.
In the 1920s, she took the classic men’s blazer and redesigned it for women to wear She used tweed, a soft and flexible fabric, instead of stiff materials and paired it with skirts or trousers. Many people were shocked, at that time women were expected to wear dresses and corsets. Some people thought it was too daring and inappropriate, while others saw it as liberating and modern. This became a revolution! Suddenly, women could look elegant and powerful without feeling restricted.
Chanel’s blazers quickly became a symbol of freedom and confidence, appearing everywhere from high-end runways to everyday street style. Today, the classic Chanel blazer is known as the Chanel jacket, a key piece of the brand’s iconic Chanel suit.
